MTC Sunshine Boxing and Fitness Academy founder Nestor Tobias says his objective this year is to produce a long-overdue world champion.
Speaking to Desert Radio recently, Tobias said he is confident that another world champion from his stable is imminent.
“I have four boxers in the top 15 world rating, who can challenge for any global title in their respective divisions, he said.
The four boxers are Jeremiah Nakathila, arguably Namibia’s preeminent fighter at the moment, the spirited Philipus ‘Energy’ Nghitumbwa and powerhouses Paulus ‘John John’ Ndjolonimus and Charles Shinima.
Having Namibian boxers in the world top 15 bracket is no mean feat, but something that demonstrates talent, commitment and ambition.
“All these four guys qualify to fight for the world title and all we need to do is create the right opportunities to seriously challenge for the titles,” said Tobias.
“We must just push and I’m going to use my expertise and experience to make it happen. I really want to show everyone that any dream is achievable and anyone can successfully realise their dreams.”
Boxing has grown in popularity countrywide over the past two decades. However, it is expensive to maintain that status, Tobias said.
“People just see events happening without knowing the true value of staging an event. That is why you see some promoters come and leave because it is not easy to stay there,” he said.
The renowned boxing promoter said he wants to do things differently this year, better than the last 20 years.
Tobias has led Paulus ‘The Hitman’ Moses, Paulus The Rock’ Ambunda and Julius ‘Blue Machine’ Indongo to multiple world titles.
This is in addition to producing countless national, continental and international champions.
Indongo was the last Sunshine product to win world titles when he famously stopped then undefeated IBF and IBO light-welterweight champion Eduard Troyanovsky in 2016. A year later he added the WBA title when he beat Ricky Burns of the United Kingdom in Glasgow, Scotland.
Ambunda went on to recapture the IBO bantamweight strap in 2018 under a rival promotion.
Tobias yearns for the glory days and has laid the foundations to realise that ambition.
“That is our aim, this year boxing fans must expect bigger and better 2023,” Tobias said.
Meanwhile, he thanked PSTBet for coming on board following their N$ 2,7 million sponsorship last week.
The boxing promoter acknowledged that many sport codes are struggling to get sponsors, but his academy has managed to engage the business sector with the promise to work harder and produce world beaters.
As part of the 33rd independence celebration, the academy will be staging a series of boxing events throughout the year.
