NATIONAL Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (Namcor) board chairperson Jennifer Comalie was granted bail in an amount of N$7 000 when she appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court after normal court hours yesterday.
Comalie appeared before magistrate Jozanne Klazen about half an hour after the court’s normal closing time of 17h00, after prosecutors at the court waited all afternoon to receive instructions on her case from the prosecutor general’s office.
The public gallery of the courtroom was packed with friends and supporters of Comalie when she appeared in the dock.
The court’s control prosecutor, Seredine Jacobs, informed the magistrate the state was not opposed to bail being granted in an amount of N$7 000, with no conditions attached to Comalie’s release from custody.
Jacobs also said “a lot of investigations” in the matter still need to be carried out and that some exhibits in the case have to be sent for forensic analysis.
Klazen granted bail as proposed by the prosecutor and postponed the case to 31 July.
Comalie has been charged with three counts of dealing in dependence-producing substances.
She was arrested on Monday, after 935 grams of cannabis, 60 crack cocaine ‘rocks’ and 10 grams of cocaine were allegedly found in her car, shortly before a Namcor board meeting was due to take place at the state-owned company’s head office in Windhoek.
Comalie, who was appointed as chairperson of Namcor’s board of directors in August 2020, is being represented by defence lawyer Trevor Brockerhoff.
