The police plan to recruit 750 police trainees to bolster its ranks, the inspector general of police, Joseph Shikongo, has confirmed.
The announcement comes weeks after president Hage Geingob announced plans to hire 3 000 new staff in the police, prisons, and Namibian Defence Force to combat youth unemployment.
Shikongo said the recruitment drive aims to address the current staffing shortage.
The police force has been struggling to maintain its numbers, with many stations facing chronic understaffing.
“Our last recruitment exercise was in 2015 and many officers have retired, while others are nearing retirement age. There have been many resignations in recent years due to various reasons,” said Shikongo.
Shikongo advised applicants to be vigilant and not fall prey to scammers, saying, “If you have any questions, call the numbers provided on the advert.”
According to the advertisement, applicants must be aged 18 to 35, have at least 25 points in six subjects, with an E or better in English. They must not have physical conditions that could interfere with the performance of police duties.
Female applicants must be willing to submit to a pregnancy test.
Former crime investigators, who are below 50 and have no criminal record, are also encouraged to apply.
Athletes in various sport disciplines and musically talented people can also apply.
