Incumbent Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) secretary Ephraim Nekongo is likely not to be opposed in his bid for re-election at the SPYL congress under way at Ongwediva, as he and his supporters allegedly refused to add a rival candidate’s nomination to the congress agenda.
The Namibian understands that delegates at the congress wanted to nominate another youth leader, Willem Amutenya, from the floor after his nomination from the youth league’s Oshikoto regional conference was rejected at a meeting of the SPYL central committee on Friday morning.
According to a source close to the congress, Amutenya has been disqualified on the basis of “personal altitudes”.
Amutenya through his lawyer Kadhila Amoomo yesterday requested Nekongo to release a vetting report with names of SPYL leaders eligible to be voted for.
Other youth league leaders such as National Youth Council executive chairperson Sharonice Busch, Kunene governor Marius Sheya and Marijam Nghidipo have also been disqualified because they only paid for their membership fees this year.
Amutenya confirmed to The Namibian on Friday that his nomination was rejected by the central committee meeting. He refused to share what his next step would be, saying “that is a matter of discussion”.
