TWO Namibian men were arrested at Outjo on Saturday, after they were caught collecting stones at Farm Hopewell Stones at around 02h08.
The weekend crime report released by police spokesperson chief inspector Elifas Kuwinga on Sunday, said the two suspects, aged 32 and 42, were allegedly found with 26 gemstones.
According to Kuwinga the value of the pietersite stones is still to be determined.
“It is reported that a security guard on night shift spotted cellphone lights in the mining area and when he inspected, realised there were three men taking stones,” he said.
Kuwinga said the guard then ran to wake up other colleagues and came back and found the suspects still in the mining area.
“The guard fired a warning shot whereby one suspect ran away and two were caught. The suspects are detained at Outjo police holding cells. Investigations in the matter continue,” he said.
*This story has been changed to reflect that the two suspects were arrested for collecting pietersite and not diamonds.
