THE Navachab Half Marathon Challenge Run will be back bigger and better in Karibib on 17 September this year after an absence of two years due to Covid-19.
At a press conference in Windhoek yesterday, the main sponsor Navachab Gold Mine announced a record sponsorship of N$120 000, while several other sponsors also reiterated their support.
“Covid-19 has had a big impact on our local races, but today we are here to launch the eighth edition of the Navachab Half Marathon and I’d like to thank Navachab Gold Mine for their sponsorship of N$120 000. I’d also like to acknowledge Nammed Medical Fund that injected N$35 000; Karibib Town Council who injected N$6 000; FNB who injected N$15 000; and of course, our long-lasting official drink sponsors Coca Cola,” race organiser Bethold Karumendu said.
“Thanks also to the stake holders of the Ministry of Sport Youth and National Service, who will provide transport for the athletes from the regions. This is also another way of organising mass participation and grass roots development in Karibib, the Erongo region and Namibia at large,” he added.
“We are inviting athletes from all our 14 regions to come and participate.
Whether you are an active athlete or a non-active athlete, we are not leaving anyone behind – from the masters and veterans to the juniors and primary schools, everyone can compete, and those who cannot do the half marathon can enter the 5km fun run,” he said.
The PRO of Navachab Gold Mine, McLyn Kasale said they were committed to the long-term development of the event.
“We would like to announce our full-time commitment to this race. We have sponsored it seven times before and usually we always committed an amount way below N$100 000, but this time we want to make a great comeback and we have amplified the amount of the sponsorship to N$120 000 which will see our athletes getting good prizes and should attract most of our athletes from all over the country,” he said.
“We are committed to this race and we want to keep on improving this race annually, so I’d also like to thank our co-sponsors who have come on board to make sure that this race continues to grow,” he added.
“Next year we might even increase the sponsorship a bit more, because we want to attract even more athletes. We are also planning to include a
10km run as well, so our commitment is ongoing and we are planning to continue having this race for quite some time,” he said.
Karumendu said that entries will be done manually in Karibib, starting a day before the race, on Friday, 16 September, while entries will also be accepted on the morning of the race.
