A businessman accused of raping his nine-year-old daughter is remaining in police custody after he appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
The 57-year-old allegedly raped the girl on 22 September at his house, where she was visiting him.
The girl lives elsewhere with her mother.
The man allegedly told his daughter not to report the incident to anyone and paid her N$300.
The case was reported on 27 September when the mother allegedly saw the child was walking awkwardly on her way to school.
With the man’s court appearance before magistrate John Sindano, state prosecutor Fidel Wakudumo opposed the granting of bail, saying it would not be in the public interest, that it is feared the accused would interfere with state witnesses and that the accused is a flight risk.
The magistrate postponed the case to 14 November, for further investigations to be carried out in the meantime.
Defence lawyer Liesl Heyman represented the accused.
