Erongo regional commander for community affairs, Ileni Shapumba, has warned the community against smuggling contraband into police holding cells.
This follows after a man (23) was allegedly caught smuggling dagga inside a packet of chips sealed with glue to an inmate at the Karibib Police Station on Sunday.
Shapumba yesterday said the dagga was found after the police searched the packet.
“We don’t know what kind of risk taking this was, but an incident of contraband making its way to the cells is concerning. For whatever reason, we are warning communities not to bring contraband to inmates detained at police holding cells,” he said.
The suspect will be formally charged and will appear in court today.
Shapumba said people should report such incidents to the police.
“If inmates are contacting them and requesting them to do that, they should rather report such information to the police so that we can investigate the manner in which they are facilitating such communication,” he said.
He said the police have came across such incidents in the region on several occasions.
